“Maurice is an amazing person. He has been instrumental in our family starting our own garden. His passion for gardening is contagious. Maurice is resourceful. He has shared ways to acquire materials for cheap and even free for our garden, which has been extremely helpful as we expand.”

Personally, I learned so much about farming, plant biology, compost, and business strategies, to name just a few. With this newfound knowledge I felt more comfortable sharing with community members and guests of the farm. It is a blessing to work with this man, for many reasons, though one in particular is his experience doing this work all over the United States and his willingness to share. Maurice worked with me and my neighbors to build gardens for neighbors to eat from. He showed us how to create garden beds with items most people throw out. Food compost, cardboard and paper, and horse and cow poo!

We were able to change the city officials’ minds who fought us about using unkept public property for community gardens. We not only were able to save the city money on maintenance of the property, but we supplied neighborhoods, food banks and churches with free fresh vegetables and fruits. Vacant properties not only grew food but friendships and knowledge. Children got involved and learned about soil, worms, seeds, nature, kindness and charity.

I would not be doing this work if not for Maurice. He is the person who got me passionate about food in all of its forms as an instrument for social change, environmental justice, and community building.

Maurice has played a role in the establishment of food systems in Northeast Ohio far beyond most people's understanding and long before it was fashionable or trendy to even care about local or organic foods. Northeast Ohio is now viewed as a national leader for local food production and I can only imagine how many people Maurice has touched through his work.
